Mathias Malling Mortensens
Inner Sound INNER SOUND
29 July - 20 August 2021
Palazzo Previtera is pleased to present the first solo show in Italy of Mathias Malling
Mortensen, abstract artist from Copenhagen.
The exhibition shows works conceived in Sicily. Spanning works in oil on
canvas and paper cuttings, through which he interrogates the relationship
between form, color and space- the show features works that have been
influenced by the landscape of Sicily together with seminal works which
remain at the core of Mortensen’s practice.
In his paintings, he expresses the sound of colours through chromatic
juxtapositions. They are part of a geometric abstraction emphasising the
luminous surface of the painting into natural and crossed lines. A careful look
of his paintings reveals the deteriorating marks of his brush strokes, gently
distorting the two-dimensional picture surface and creating a surprise to the
observer.
In his paper cuttings, he cuts the paper with absolute perfection: works often
comprise of small or big geometric cuts which then become part of a
harmonious composition. Each cut has been done with a single gesture and
there is affinity between rawness of the cut and the colour applied to it.
Mortensen's paintings and paper cuttings succeed in creating a language of
Inner Sound in which no one is fully present unless the depth of colour, forms
and shapes bring a synaestethic reference to the future.
